Ala. Sheriff: Man Left Woman, Child in Burning Car

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Jefferson County authorities say a wanted man left a woman and child inside a burning car as he ran away from a sheriff's deputy chasing him.

The Birmingham News reports the chase happened Saturday as a deputy pulled over a car for a traffic violation. Sheriff's officials say the 37-year-old driver had outstanding arrest warrants and decided to flee.

Authorities say the suspect's car caught fire during the case. The driver pulled over and ran, but left a woman and child inside the burning car.

They escaped without injury and firefighters extinguished the flames. Sheriff's officials say the suspect was captured near where he ditched the car.

Authorities say they're not releasing the man's name until they file formal charges.
