JASPER, Ala. (AP) -- Two women who worked as volunteers at an Alabama animal shelter are charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty.

Reports say 19-year-old Jerilyn Curtis and 18-year-old Angel Kitchens are each charged with 23 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

Both women are from Walker County and served as volunteers at the county animal shelter.

Curtis has been living with her uncle, Jeremy Curtis, who reported finding dead dogs nearby.

Winston County sheriff's officials took about two dozen 23 live animals from Curtis' property. Seven of them had to be euthanized due to illness and disease.

Court records aren't available online to show whether either woman has a lawyer.
