Ala. Senate Committee Chair to Ask for K-12 Teacher Raise

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The chairman of the Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee says he will ask the Senate to approve a 2 percent raise for K-12 employees.

Republican Sen. Trip Pittman of Daphne had originally pushed for a 1 percent raise with a 1 percent bonus if state tax collections exceed expectations. But he said the House approved 2 percent and the sentiment of the Senate is to approve 2 percent. Pittman said the state's economy is improving, and he expects a 2 percent raise is sustainable.

The Senate is scheduled to take up the education budget and teacher pay raise late Tuesday afternoon.
