Ala. Public Service Commission Extends Special Electric Rates

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The state Public Service Commission has voted unanimously to extend special Alabama Power electric rates that were started last year to help stimulate the state's economy.

One of the special rates extended Tuesday provides a one-year rate discount for a business that opens in a building that has been vacant for at least six months. The incentive applies to a new business or to a business that opens an additional location. Sixty-six businesses have used that program.

Eleven companies have been approved for another program that provides a two-year discount for large industries that expand or open new plants in Alabama.

Alabama Power officials said the savings for both programs so far total $188,000.
