VANCE, Ala. (AP) -- Mercedes-Benz's Alabama plant has been named the state's large manufacturer of the year by two business groups.
Reports say the plant in Vance was named Alabama Manufacturer of the Year for plants with more than 400 workers Friday by the Business Council of Alabama and the Alabama Technology Network.
Mercedes-Benz began making automobiles in Alabama in 1997 and built a record 180,379 vehicles last year. The Vance plant employs about 2,900 people.
At a luncheon Friday, Business Council of Alabama officers noted that Mercedes has continued to invest in its Alabama operation. The company's initial $300 million investment in Vance is expected to have grown to $4.5 billion in 2015.
