BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- State corrections officials say a stabbing at the St. Clair County Correctional Facility left a 24-year-old inmate in critical condition.
Authorities say 24-year-old Marquette Cummings was taken to the UAB Hospital after being stabbed during a fight Monday morning.
Alabama Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett told AL.com (http://bit.ly/1cJnSKN) that the fight stemmed from an ongoing dispute over the weekend between Cummings and an inmate who was convicted in Dallas County.
Officials say Timothy Gayle told investigators that he stabbed Cummings in an act of self-defense.
Details on what the inmate used to stab the victim with was not immediately available.
