Abbeville City Council Members went back and forth between two applicants for their new Chief of Police. Monday night, they chose Marlos Walker. It was a 4-2 vote.
Walker currently serves as Captain in the Dale County Sheriff's Office. He's been in that position for almost nine years and is Commander of the Wiregrass Violent Crime and Drug Task Force. Back in 2012, he served just a little more than one year in the United States Marshal Service. More than 20 law enforcement officers applied for the position. The city council narrowed down the search to Walker and Noel Vanlandingham—a lieutenant with the Abbeville Police Department.
“He's well-qualified, no doubt. They both were well-qualified. The reason they chose him, they felt he had more administrative experience. I would say that that was the basis behind his being picked,” said Mayor Jim Giganti of the City of Abbeville.
Walker will take over as Police Chief by the end of the week because former Police Chief Mike Jones is retiring. His last day is Tuesday.
