A North Dakota man is lucky to be alive.

He is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a nail gun.

At 45 years old, Jeff Luptak is learning to walk all over again.

He stumbles every now and then, but the North Dakota man is glad to be alive.

While working on a house, Luptak accidentally shot himself in the head with a nail gun.

A three-inch nail went through his skull. He said he could feel no pain but thought he was going to die.

"That's all I could think about was what would happen to my daughters and my wife if I would be gone."

Luptak was brought to the national brain aneurysm center at St. Joseph's hospital in St. Paul.

Ct scans show the nail lodged in between his brain's left and right hemispheres.

His doctors say the nail just missed major artery vessels.

"He was very lucky. I mean this is a potentially fatal injury depending on what structures it hits on the way." said Dr. Eric Nussbaum, who operated on Luptak.

It took two doctors and more than an hour to pull the nail out.

"It was amazing considering the depth of the nail penetrated that he didn't have any more problems."

The only problem Luptak is having is movement in his left toes and ankle.

He is expected to make a full recovery.

His wife says the incident hasn't changed him one bit.

"Every step of the way it was Jeff the whole time. There was no point in this whole process where Jeff was not his own self."

Luptak says he's very lucky that someone was watching over him that day that had a little more power than he did.
