Montgomery, Ala. — The “Sweet 16” Finalists have been selected from a group of dedicated elementary and secondary school educators who were chosen by their school districts as candidates for Alabama’s 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year.

The field will soon be narrowed down to the “Final Four,” with the Teacher of the Year winner being revealed at a ceremony hosted by the Alabama State Department of Education on Wednesday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the RSA Plaza Terrace.

Two of the finalists are from the Dothan City School system: Tracy Pruitt of Montana Street Magnet School and Barbara Nelson of Northview High School.

“The educators nominated for this prestigious award nurture the character, intellect, and talent of Alabama’s students,” said Dr. Tommy Bice, State Superintendent of Education. “They exemplify teaching at its best and we are proud to have them teaching in our state.”

Alabama’s Teacher of the Year spends the majority of the school year serving as the spokesperson for education and the teaching profession as well as presenting workshops to various groups. Additionally, Alabama’s representative is a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year.

Suzanne Culbreth, a previous finalist and Alabama’s current Teacher of the Year, said, “It has been an honor to represent and be the voice for teachers in Alabama this year. I have had the great privilege of not only traveling throughout the state to see the life-changing effects our schools are having, but also sharing nationally the great things happening in education in Alabama. Being Alabama's Teacher of the Year has provided opportunities beyond my imagination.

An elementary and secondary teacher was nominated from each of the eight Alabama State Board of Education districts in March. A member of the Alabama State Board of Education, the local board of education, a local superintendent or representative, the current district Teachers of the Year, and a representative from higher education served as committee members in selecting the finalists.
