ABI to Review Fatal Shooting of East Ala. Man

SMITHS STATION, Ala. (AP) -- The Alabama Bureau of Investigation will lead the review of a fatal shooting by a Lee County deputy.

Authorities say an officer shot a man who accelerated his car toward the deputy during a traffic stop in Smith Station on Saturday.

The man died early Sunday at a hospital in Columbus, Ga. Lee County Coroner Bill Harris identifies him as 33-year-old Howard Edward Nevels III of Phenix City.

A statement by Harris says Nevels was shot in the head. Authorities haven't released the name of the officer who fired the fatal shot.

Harris says the ABI is heading the investigation. Nevels' body was taken to a state laboratory in Montgomery for a post-mortem examination.
