'AAA' wants to be Your Designated Driver for the New Year

It's the time of the year where a phone call here could save your life.
For the 26th year AAA is offering it's Tow-for-Life program.

"Basically what it is, is we offer free towing services to anyone and everyone up to 10 miles," said AAA Alabama Spokesman Clay Ingram.

You'll be charged a small fee after 10 miles.
According to a recent study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, during the last decade, the years' highest number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities happen on New Year's day.

"We want people to plan ahead before they go out to arrange for a designated driver or place to stay or some other form of transportation to get home," explained Ingram.

If you or someone you know has too much to drink on New Year's eve, just call 1-800-AAA-HELP.

"Just ask for the tow for life program and they'll ask where you are and we'll send a tow truck out to get you and your vehicle and take you home," said Ingram.

You don't have to be a member to call for the service but there are three conditions:
The car has to be operational, you have to be with your car and when the tow truck does arrive the driver will only take you home.

"We can't take you to another party or another bar or any place like that," added Ingram.

The program begins at 6 p.m. Monday and continues until 6 a.m. New Year's day.

Ingram says if you're with a group the driver may only have room for one or two passengers, so keep that in mind as well.
Ingram also says a lot of people use this service, so there's no need to be afraid to call.

Local cab companies we spoke with say they are not offering free rides, but they will be open for service.
