Florida Senior Senator Bill Nelson has announced a Homeland Security decision to allocate 1-million dollars to Walton County for a new radio system.
Senator Nelson says this is one of the largest grants ever awarded for an area the size of Walton County.
During a rash of forest fires last spring, emergency responders on different radio frequencies had difficulty communicating.
The grant dollars should eliminate that problem.
Besides a universal frequency, the grant is also expected to solve the problem of what's called "dead air" in remote areas of Walton County that have no radio connection.
