Man Convicted of Rape, Sexual Abuse After Gospel Sing

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A Houston County jury convicted a man of raping a young female relative in a Dothan hotel room.

Jurors found 57-year-old Nathan Williams of rape and sexual abuse Thursday.

Prosecutors said the girl was 15 in January of 2004 when she said Williams sexually assaulted her. She and her family had traveled from Oklahoma to Dothan visit relatives.

Testimony showed Williams had driven from Eufaula to perform at a gospel singing event.

Williams maintains he's innocent and no sentencing date was announced.

Six sheriff's deputies were in the courtroom when the verdict was announced. Tensions between supporters of Williams and the victim were high throughout the trial.

The victim, now 18, said she will attend Miles College next year.
