Geneva City Council Election

A man who lost his bid for the Geneva City Council is claiming there was ineligible voting.

Gary Roberson lost by just one-vote to Archie Howell for the open District 4 seat. But, Roberson says he has witnesses that say at least one voter who lives outside the district was able to cast a ballot.

Roberson lost by one-vote, 86-85 to Archie Howell. Roberson claims he knows of at least one person who doesn't live in District 4 being allowed to vote in the race. He believes the results are "tainted" and a new election should be held.

The city attorney says the ballots cannot be "rechecked" unless ordered by the courts' and says the allegations are criminal in nature.

The council certified the "results," but Roberson says he plans to file a voter fraud charge with the district attorney's office.

As for the Geneva mayoral election, it looks like a "repeat" for the Sept. 14 runoff. That’s because the two challengers for the seat each wound up with 351 votes.

They are councilman Robert Gene Beard and businessman Jack Helms. Incumbent Mayor Karen Simmons led the three-person field with 631 votes. She was less than forty votes from taking the 50-percent margin needed to "avoid" a runoff.
