Dothan Man Pleads Guilty to Stabbing Ex-Teacher

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A man awaiting trial in the fatal stabbing of a former Dothan City School teacher pleaded guilty to murder in a Houston County courtroom Monday and was sentenced to life in prison.

41-year-old Eddie Carroll, also of Dothan, attacked 46-year-old James Bland Smith after he agreed to allow Carroll's estranged girlfriend to live with him.

The homicide occurred in February 2006.

Authorities said Carroll and the unidentified woman were in the process of breaking up and Smith was a former boyfriend.

Smith, who taught school in the city for nearly 15 years, died of multiple stab wounds to the chest and abdomen.
