Geneva Levee

Initial projections of Tropical Storm Bonnie brought on a great deal of concern in one Wiregrass city, but as of last night that fear had been lifted.

Work on the Geneva levee restoration project got underway a few months ago.

Over recent weeks, trees and other vegetation were removed from the 70-year-old earthen dam.

Geneva County Emergency Management Director Margaret Mixon says things are at a critical stage.

A large flow of water from upstream could cause the structure to collapse. But fortunately, that didn't happen from "Bonnie."

If the storm had dumped a large amount of rainfall in the area, levee crews were ready to lay down sandbags in order to stabilize the construction.
