Emergency Sirens

Dothan city commissioners agreed to participate in a program to set up an emergency warning system, but the vote was not unanimous.

The city will join the Houston County Commission and the local emergency management agency to purchase nine sirens.

The sirens would be purchased with a Homeland Security Grant and would have an effective range of about a mile in all directions.

District One City Commissioner James Redding voted against the agreement because the first nine sirens do not include one in his district near two schools.

But, District Two Commissioner Amos Newsome says guidelines on the placement of the sirens had to be followed.

Dothan officials say they hope to buy more sirens next year and the first one will be installed near Northview High School and Landmark Elementary in Redding’s district.
