The punch-card ballot system is being put on trial.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio claims the machines now being used aren't uniform and should be junked in several counties. It also wants punch cards removed before the November election.

Among other things, the ACLU claims punch-card votes aren't counted properly and don't allow voters to correct possible balloting problems.

Attorney Paul Mokey compared the 2000 count from two counties with similar demographics but different equipment. He said figures shows the county including Cincinnati had nearly 3,000 over votes for president, while the county with Columbus showed no over votes cast using newer electronic equipment.

An attorney for the state argued that the government did nothing intentionally wrong.
