Dothan School Board Meeting Turns into Forum on Consolidation
Members of the Dothan Board of Education want more input before they vote on a controversial school consolidation plan to save money. A vote was scheduled to be held today during the Board's regular meeting but that meeting has been turned into a public hearing.

Members of the Dothan Board of Education want more input before they vote on a controversial school consolidation plan to save money.
A vote was scheduled to be held Monday during the Board's regular meeting, but that meeting has been turned into a public hearing.
"They begin their high school journey in the 9th grade," says Thomas Harrison, director of Operations for “Yes We Can! Dothan”.
But that journey could begin in the 10th grade for students in Dothan City Schools.
That is if Dothan High and Northview High Schools consolidate to one building, leaving freshmen behind in the other.
Harrison says research shows this is a bad idea. "Drug, gang related activities, student attendance is poor, teacher morale is poor, parent and community involvement is poor, but most importantly, student achievement in that type of high school is generally lower than others," he explained.
According to Harrison, most parents don't want the consolidation and separation to take place.
“Yes We Can Dothan!" has come up with plans to enhance the school system over the years and is worried about losing progress.
"Parents and students are happy, test scores are improving, and we think that we should not take any chance on losing the momentum that we have now," concludes Harrison.
A vote by the School Board on the consolidation plan has been pushed back one week to March 29th.
There will be a forum Tuesday night at 6:30pm at Beverlye Magnet School and on Thursday night at 5:15pm at Covenant United Methodist Church.
