PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Prattville police officers will soon be
packing more firepower with the addition of semiautomatic,
high-powered rifles.
Police Chief Alfred Wadsworth tells the Montgomery Advertiser in
a Sunday story that the department will open bids on March 31 for
"40 or more" AR-15 style rifles.
The department now has 20 of the rifles issued to supervisors.
Wadsworth said the new guns will be paid for with money seized
in drug cases and won't be issued until patrol officers are
properly trained.
The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office added similar rifles for
its patrol division last year and the Autauga County Sheriff's
Office has several M-16s it received from the federal government.
