MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - State Sen. Roger Bedford has rewritten
his bill to tax and regulate electronic bingo, and he will make a
second attempt to pass it in the closing days of the legislative
session.
The Legislature returns to Montgomery on Tuesday to begin its
last 10 meeting days.
Bedford says critics had complained that his original 43-page
bill was too complicated. His new bill is eight pages. Many of the
details that were in his original bill, including specifying 10
sites for electronic bingo casinos, are left out of his new bill.
His proposed constitutional amendment would set minimum tax levels
for electronic bingo and set up a state regulatory commission.
If the Legislature and Alabama voters were to approve the
proposal, then it specifies that the Legislature would meet in a
special session in January to work out the details.
