In Washington County more than 100 friends and family paid honor to a former lawmaker who was credited with shaping the political landscape of Northwest Florida.
The widow of Representative Sam Mitchell and his two daughters officially cut the ribbon to Sam Mitchell Highway Thursday afternoon.
What was Washington County Road 279 has been renamed in honor of the longtime lawmaker. The 15-mile stretch connects Vernon with Caryville.
Representative Mitchell died last November, but his closest friends remembered when he was one of the most powerful politicians at the state capitol in Tallahassee. His widow says he had a simple philosophy.
Mitchell played a large role in getting Interstate-10 built in Northwest Florida during the 1970s. He also helped land a Panama City campus of Florida State University.
