Weather delays have kept Houston County workers from completing certain road projects around the county. Workers will be putting in some overtime hours on Fridays and Saturdays to make some progress.

"We are anywhere from 2 to 3 years behind" says Houston County Engineer Mark Pool.

That may seem like a lot of time, but the truth is the Houston County engineering department is short 20 employees because of a tight budget and has seen a fair share of delays.

"I have never seen a winter like this where it dragged on and rained and rained and rained" says Pool.

Currently, there are 26 flood sites that are still in need of repairs and certain road projects like the ones on Brannon Stand Road, Sanders Road, and Fortner Street.

Employees will be working overtime until substantial progress is made or there is no money left to pay overtime hours.

Some projects need to be finished before others.

"There is certain work that we have to do before the contractor starts. If the contracted bids on a project than we cannot hold him up or else he can file a claim on us"

In the meantime, county officials say they realize the importance of repairs that have to be done in each community, but some will have to be patient.

"A lot of them are drainage problems and have been out there for a while and are exasperated by the amount of rain we had so people want us to come in and take care of our issues when they have them and it’s our job to do that" said Mark Culver, Houston County Commission Chairman.

There are no set dates on when projects will be complete.

Workers are just hoping for fewer rainy days.
