Distance Learning Helps Houston Co. High Schoolers
With finance shortfalls in several Wiregrass schools, cuts are being made on a regular basis,but technology is helping bring Houston County students together for high tech learning.

Amy Sanders teaches a class of about 30 students the thing is, they're not all at the same school.

"They can see everything I am doing, I can see everything they do, there's really not that much difference besides I am not physically in the room with them."

Through the distance learning program at Houston county career and technical center in Ashford, students from all 5 high schools in the county are taught on this monitor.

"This is a class that kind of gets them introduced to the workforce and learns about work skills such as resumes, interviewing and things that they need to be ready for to enter the workforce."

Classes are popped a large screen the teacher can see all classes divided on the screen.

"you get to see people from different schools and then you can see them on the screen and then you see them out in public and it's like, hey, I have a class with you.

This is the first distance learning class for Melissa sellers. She says the interaction gets easier after time. Just how easy...I had the chance to interview a Rehobeth student without ever leaving Ashford high school.

"3hows it been learning the material? I mean it's pretty much the same to me as a regular classroom, except it’s on a screen."

A screen that could help further students learning, even in a tough time, The program able to start thanks to an 85-thousand dollar state grant. Teachers are hoping to start an additional class next year.
