West Point Home's Plant in Valley to Close

VALLEY, Ala. (AP) - About 300 West Point Home employees at the Joseph L. Lanier Plant in Valley have received a 60-day notice that their plant will cease operations by September 31st.

A company spokeswoman said the Lanier closing is part of the same global restructuring efforts the company cited when it announced the other plant closings earlier this year.

The company announced in May that facilities in three states will be shuttered, including two in Alabama - the Opelika Finishing Plant and the Abbeville Fabrication Plant. One plant in Florida and two in Georgia are also scheduled to close by August 31st.

Several workers at the Opelika plant said they heard rumors about the plant closing and have already begun looking for a new job.

The company's other Valley operations, including the Carter Plant, are not included in the closings.
