He along with the other republican attorney general candidate Luther Strange went head to head Wednesday at the Coffee County Republican Women's meeting.
This is the first time their campaign paths have crossed and some say it made for some interesting debate.
Opening remarks from both incumbent Troy King and candidate Luther Strange outlined their qualifications for attorney general and promised protection for Alabama residents.
But the questions and answer session quickly turned to the issue of electronic bingo
"The Supreme court's been very clear on this. Now the issue is, are we going to enforce the law? I had never thought, and I've done some work on this. Never in the history of the state of Alabama has a governor had to step in and create a task force to do the job of the attorney general, not in the history of the State of Alabama," says Strange.
"The law's not clear. I'll share with Mr. Strange a copy of what the Supreme Court said. Don't take my word for it. Don't ask me do I think the Supreme Court has settled it or not. The Supreme Court, right here it is the cornerstone decision decided on November the 13th, 2009. They said the governor didn't ask the question of whether electronic bingo is legal in Alabama and we don't decide it," says King.
Questions of whether or not campaign contributions were taken from gambling interests were asked as well.
"I can tell you we haven't taken gambling money. I can tell you we've sent back the money that the gamblers tried to send us and when we've identified there was money that looked like it was from gambling interests we sent it back," says King.
"No I've not accepted any money from gambling. 90% of the money we received in our campaign fortunately is from individuals, ordinary people," says Strange.
As for a vote on electronic bingo?
“Let’s just have a straight up or down vote. That’s what the people of Alabama want. That’s what they deserve. That’s what I proposed five years ago,” says King.
“Whether or not we vote is up to the legislature and it’s up to the governor. The job of the attorney general is to enforce the law that we have on the books right now,” says Strange.
Both say stricter voter identification laws are needed and are advocates for crime victims.
They agreed that the biggest difference is experience, King in public service and Strange in private practice.
