Mobile Home Ordinance

After months of heated discussion, a mobile home ordinance has been established in one Wiregrass city. It is in response to a tragedy that took place two-and-a-half-years ago.

In December 2000, a tornado tore through a Geneva neighborhood claiming one life and displaced several families.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency told local officials that the city needed to enact a measure within its comprehensive plan. Streets needed to be zoned residential, or for multi-dwellings. Multi-dwellings is for fixed structures and mobile homes.

Geneva resident Shirley Mosier lives in a fixed structure, but also rents a mobile home. She feels a property owner should have a say on what can be placed on their land.

Similar mobile home ordinances have been passed in several dozen cities across Alabama,
