MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Information missing from a state crime database is allowing some people to buy guns in Alabama when the purchases should be barred.
The Press-Register of Mobile reported Sunday that a database at the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center has 2.7 million arrest records that don't reflect case outcomes.
Sometimes, people can buy guns when previous court cases should bar the deals. In Mobile, a man who purchased a military-style rifle despite a marijuana arrest was later sentenced to prison for possessing the weapon.
Officials say the database isn't as up-to-date as it could be for several reasons.
Some counties still send in information by paper rather than computer, and charges filed by police are sometimes changed by prosecutors.
