SEATTLE (AP) - Proposed national educational guidelines would move math and English instruction closer to standards that are uniform and more rigorous.

The plan is expected to lead to standardized textbooks and testing, making it easier for students to move from state to state.

Also under the proposals, some learning goals will be taught
earlier.

The head of the math standards committee says the standards "are as high as the highest standards that any state has." But another math expert doesn't think making kids learn things earlier translates into higher standards.

The public has until April 2 to comment on the proposed new national standards. Developers of the guidelines hope to publish final education goals for K-12 math and English in May.
