Twenty-two-year-old Brandyn Benjamin was convicted six weeks ago for the November 2000 shooting death and robbery of 52-year-old Jimmy Floyd Lewis.
Benjamin was arrested after police found the victim's wallet and the murder weapon in the suspect's home.
A key witness was unavailable to testify for the defense after Benjamin was convicted, so Judge Jerry White delayed the sentencing phase of the trial until today.
The same jury that convicted Benjamin will be asked to recommend life without parole or the death penalty, but the final decision will be up to Judge White.
