Florida Nursing Shortage

Gov. Jeb Bush is out with details of a new program designed to lure more nurses and other health care workers to Florida and keep them here.

The new program will make them low-interest mortgages and student loans. Bush said the program is needed because Florida is facing a nursing shortage that is a "pending crisis."

The governor said the state will need 36,000 more nurses by 2006. It has partnered the Federal National Mortgage Association to promote up to 100 percent financing for home loans to nurses and select health care workers in Florida.

Florida has over 178,000 licensed registered nurses, but 9,800 more positions are waiting to be filled.
