Starting Wednesday night a carnival is opening to the public with 20 percent of ride proceeds benefiting the city.

The first ever Abbeville Carnival is coming to town and excitement is building throughout the community.

Abbeville Mayor Ryan Blalock said, "It's an opportunity for kids to get together and have fun and enjoy their childhood but also the parents will be able to get together and the leaders of the community."

Carnival owners already have put money into the community by purchasing a business license. That's money city officials are glad to see coming into the area.

Mayor Blalock said, "The revenue continues to go down and the costs continue to go up. We have had some relief in fuel. Last year we made some cuts that are going to help and the revenue now is better but not where it needs to be. Sales tax is down."

Twenty percent of all ride sales will go back to the city. Officials already know who they'd like that money to benefit.

Blalock said, "I would love to see that money go back to our recreation program which has had significant budget cuts. It would be a great chance to show that the kids are the ones bringing in that revenue, so let’s give it back to them."

The city would like to build a pavilion in the coming year at the sports complex in town. They would also like to update landscaping and upgrade several playgrounds.

The carnival is located just off Highway 431 in Abbeville. Gates opened Wednesday. The carnival will pull out of town Saturday night.
