Beef Protection

A House subcommittee Thursday approved $450,000 to use to help protect Alabama's beef supply from mad cow disease.

Alabama GOP Congressmen Spencer Bachus of Vestavia Hills, Jo Bonner of Mobile and Mike Rogers of Anniston announced that the funds are earmarked for the Alabama Beef Connection, a statewide program that utilizes electronic tags for livestock.

Alabama provides over 350,000 beef cattle annually to the nation's food supply. The proposed appropriation is an amendment to the 2005 federal farm bill that still must be approved in the House and Senate.
