Flu Season-CDC

By  |

The government says it won't repeat last year's mistake of having too few flu vaccines available, announcing 100 million flu shots will be distributed for this winter's annual outbreak.

Health officials also say they are improving their knowledge about why kids die from the seasonal virus.

Gregory Wallace of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's immunization services division said yesterday the flu vaccine will be available in the fall. That's not including the estimated 4.5 million doses of flu shots the CDC is planning to stockpile this winter for children.

Another hurdle for health officials will be to find ways to prevent kids from dying from the flu. The 152 kids who died this year had an average age of three years old. About 70 percent of the children who died had not received flu shots.
