Property Tax Vote on Hold

As expected, the Houston County Commission voted Monday to cancel the Sept. 10 vote on increasing property taxes in Dothan at the request of the City School Board.

At issue is "how and where" Dothan residents who live outside Houston County should be voting.

When the Dothan City School Board called for the referendum, they thought all residents of Dothan could vote at their normal city polling place with Houston County supervising the election.

Since that time, the board has discovered that Dothan residents in Dale and Henry counties would have to have their own election, supervised by their respective county officials.

Henry County commissioners authorized the election but Dale County officials did not.

Some Dothan residents in Dale County said they were promised when they were annexed that they wouldn't be taxed.

Dothan School Board members voted Friday to stop the election.

Monday, Superintendent Leon Hobbs asked Houston County officials to help set up a meeting with all of the parties involved.

The school board wants to reschedule the election as soon as possible, once all the details are worked out.
