One Wiregrass city is in shock after hearing that the owner of a local tanning salon may have been spying on customers.

Can you imagine locking the door behind you in a tanning booth, thinking you're alone, only to glance up and see a small camera looking back at you?

One Florala resident saw just that, so she went straight to the police.

“She went to the tanning bed at a local business here, Westside Video and Tans. She noticed a small camera that was angled down videoing in the tanning bed area,” says Florala Police Chief Sonny Bedsole.

Florala police secured a search warrant and found the camera live streaming to a monitor in an office.

Two suspects have been arrested but many residents were surprised to hear the news.

“I would be mad, very mad. I mean that's just sick, it's not even right,” says resident Kim McCulligh.

Several computers have been turned over to the Alabama Bureau of Investigation's Cyber Crimes Unit to evaluate whether or not any of the images had been recorded.

“We do know that there were young victims in there. We've interviewed some as young as 14 that had been tanning at that particular bed and obviously if they were recorded in an undressed fashion, that's going to be production of child pornography, so it could get more serious, but we don't know that. That's something for A.B.I to determine,” says Bedsole.

Officers also found methamphetamine residue, marijuana and a smoking device during their search.

“One of the Covington County investigators interviewed one of the suspects and in a tape recorded statement confessed that he and his partner installed the camera. They alleged they weren't recording, but he did admit that they were watching people undress at the tanning bed and he confessed to the use of the drugs and paraphernalia that we found,” says Bedsole.

Owner, Tim Townsend and Ricky Perez are both facing charges for drugs and criminal surveillance.

More charges could be added if A.B.I finds recordings on the computers.

Chief Bedsole asks that if you tan at that location and feel suspicious about your visits contact the Florala Police Department.
