At Tuesday morning’s meeting, the Dothan City Commission voted to renew City Manager Mike West's contact for another three years.

But not everyone was on board with the idea.

In a 4-3 vote, the commission decided to keep City Manager Mike West.

“Personally, I think I’ve done a good job here and I think most of the commission thinks I’ve done a good job,” said West.

Mayor Mike Schmitz, as well as commissioners, Paul Lee, John Craig, and Taylor Barbaree all voted in favor of the contract.

“We need his professionalism and his experience,” said Schmitz.
“What he does he brings consistency to this city,” added Lee.
“He is an asset to this city that I failed to recognize sometime back that I recognize now,” said Craig.
“I appreciate your integrity and I appreciate what you do for the residents of Dothan,” said Barbaree.

Commissioners James Reading, Amos Newsome, and Keith Seagle voted against the renewal, citing several inadequacies with the contract.

“I disagree with the contract,” said Newsome.

“I told our mayor that if we could reach compromise on a few key contract issues, including compensation and the termination clause, then I would indeed vote for the new contract. We came up a bit short of what I felt was needed,” said Seagle.

West says everything turned out pretty much how he anticipated.

“I realized that there were some disagreements there but basically from what I could tell that was the way the vote would go,” said West.

He plans on continuing to make Dothan, a better place to live.

“The city has been a great place to work for and the future of Dothan looks bright and I’m just excited to be a part of that future,”

West's current contract will expire February 10, 2013.

The city manager's annual salary is more than $160,000 dollars a year.
