Henry County Schools are now allowing students to have cell phones on campus.

In fact, some teachers are encouraging students to use them at school.

Rene Parker is embracing the times and using technology like Twitter to help her students learn.

Parker teaches at Headland Middle School. She said, "I think the middle school is such a teaching age. So maybe that's what we are here for, to teach them this is what you need to do when you get older."

Parker texts important test tips to her students during the course, and her efforts are already paying off.

Parker said, "I can see several percentage points that the scores went up overall."

Students agree that mixing work with play is helping them achieve more.

Student Anna Adams said, "It helps me a lot. It reminds me when I need to study and what I need to study and it helps me on my test."

Last school year, students weren't allowed to have cell phones on campus.

School administrators are pleased with how well the new policy has been implemented.

Principal of Headland Middle School Lori Blankenship said, "Last year, we knew that it was not working. We knew that students were brining the phones; we just weren't able to catch the students. They were being taken up left and right because it was no tolerance. This year we have had a decrease in referrals."

Students are only allowed to use their cell phones at break or when teachers request that they use them for learning.

About 90 percent of students at Headland Middle School have cell phones.

For students who don't have a cell phone, they can view the same information that is texted out online at twitter.com.
