Geneva Downtown Sidewalk Controversy

A Geneva downtown shop owner says an on-going sidewalk restoration project may destroy the foundation to her business.

Denise Gomez says she invested in her building because of its historical nature.

The store's original pine wood floors were constructed between 1895 and 1901.

Gomez says the sidewalk has covered up the underground vents used for cross-ventilation, which has lead to the warping and eventual destruction of the century-old floor.

“These are 100-year-old heart of pine floors. If the floors were to buckle we would not be able to find anything to compare to this," said Gomez.

At the request of the Geneva City Council, Gomez plans to hire an engineer to investigate how the sidewalk rehab project might affect the structural integrity of her business.
