Estimated Cost of Attempted Raid on Country Crossing
More than 200 troopers were mobilized
around 4 a.m. Friday and waited for hours before raids planned by
the governor's antigambling task force were called off.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - More than 200 troopers were mobilized
around 4 a.m. Friday and waited for hours before raids planned by
the governor's antigambling task force were called off.
Normally only eight troopers would be on duty to watch Alabama
highways in those early morning hours. A University of Alabama
criminal justice professor, David Forde, estimates the operation
cost the state as much as $130,000 at a time when state agencies
are facing budget cuts.
The mobilization was called even though legal obstacles blocked
both planned raids. Forde said he doesn't believe the two massive
operations Friday morning were worth the cost and time involved.
Gov. Bob Riley's communications director, Jeff Emerson, said the
troopers were doing their job to enforce the law.
