Updated: Fri 12:24 PM, Aug 23, 2002

U.S. Highway 98 is in the main traffic corridor along the Northwest Florida Gulf Coast Beaches.

Federal, state and local authorities are putting together a plan called "Strike Force 98." It's designed to prevent accidents and fatalities on the stretch of Florida highway.

From 1999 through June of this year, 86 people have died in traffic crashes on U.S. 98. The most this year is in Bay County were nine people have died.

A great deal of improvement is taking place with miles of roadway under construction.

Still, authorities said the key is for motorists to slow it down and not drink and drive.

"Strike Force 98" will emphasize DUI prevention, speeding, seatbelt violations and aggressive driving.
