A Dothan man has been sentenced to die for killing an elderly woman.
Twenty-two-year-old Antonio Jones was charged with the New Year’s Eve 1999 beating death of 80-year-old Ruth Kirkland.
Witnesses testified most of the major bones in the upper half of Kirkland’s body were broken in the attack.
Kirkland’s car was stolen and Jones was arrested while driving it.
A DNA test also revealed the woman’s blood was on his clothes.
The same jury that convicted Jones also recommended the death penalty, and Judge Jerry White followed that recommendation.
Before sentencing Jones, Judge White called the crime the worst he's ever seen after nearly 40-years in the criminal justice system.
