Hartford Police Pay Raise

A newly appointed police chief says higher salaries are helping attract qualified applicants to his department.

Hartford Police Chief Nicholas Finer has just hired Danny Gaskin as a new officer on the force.

Last week, the city council raised the starting pay to $11 an hour.

Following a six-month probationary period, an officer could be earning $12.50 an hour.

In addition, each squad car has been equipped with a laptop computer which can be used on criminal background checks, and to reduce office paperwork.

"We're able to come up with an additional dollar and a half starting and this makes us competitive with Dothan and Houston County and area departments like those again," said Chief Finer.

Chief Finer says he has filled nearly all ten, full-time salaried patrol officer positions.
