Since Tuesday’s heavy rainfall residents in Carryville, Florida continue to see water in the Choctawhatchee River rise.
"It goes, Westville across the river bridge over here in Holmes County and they have pretty much the same problem with flooded roads and the water goes west just like it comes back East towards Carryville."
Gene Forehand is the fire chief in Carryville and is no stranger to the rising water in the river every time it rains. Back in 1994 levels rose more than 20 feet causing residents to buy out through FEMA and relocate their homes.
The average level at the Choctawhatchee River here in Carryville sits at 12 feet; Tuesdays rainfall raised it to about 14 feet and officials say Fridays rainfall could rise the levels even more. But it’s not just the dangerous situations it can cause on the roadways, it's other situations like the strength of the current.
"We have some folks that still come out here and dock boats, somebody just left when you got here and I told them the currents out here could really turn your boat over pretty easy."
Richard Busby and his wife live 10 miles north of Carryville. They're taking an impromptu trip to Eufaula in case more rain floods the area.
"This rain that we have now if it don't rain anymore before the river goes down then we'll not get in our trailer, but if it was to become a big rain tonight I can't get in my trailer or my truck." A situation residents will have to wait for until the rain subsides.
The Red Cross will be opening a shelter for flood victims in Holmes County Thursday night at six o'clock at the New Hope Volunteer Fire Department-Community Center located at the intersection of Highway 2 and Highway 179-A.
