Church Closings

It's another piece of the fallout from the clergy sex abuse scandal.

The Boston Archdiocese is shutting down 65 parishes. That's more-than one-out-of-six of its 357 parishes.

The restructuring comes amid shrinking attendance at Mass, and smaller weekly collections -- caused partly by the sex abuse scandal.

Archbishop Sean O'Malley had said in December that the Roman Catholic archdiocese would have to undergo a major downsizing. He
said the church couldn't support struggling parishes, amid a financial crisis caused partly by the abuse cases.

The individual parishes learned their fate in letters from O'Malley that were delivered this morning.

The parishes will gradually shut down during the rest of this year.
