RIVERDALE, Ga. (AP) - Five members of one family were killed and at least six other people were injured in a fire that destroyed a motel this morning in Riverdale.
The fire was reported at about 7:30 a.m. at a Budget Inn motel in Riverdale, a suburb south of Atlanta.
Officials said the five dead included three adults and two children. State Safety Fire Commissioner John Oxendine says their identities are known but are being withheld until their relatives could be notified.
One relative at the scene said they included a woman and two of her children, her fiance and her uncle.
Clayton County Fire Chief Alex Cohilas said at a news conference Thursday afternoon that six people were hospitalized, including three firefighters, two women and a man who were staying at the Budget Inn.
The injured civilians were at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Cohilas said at least a dozen people were evacuated. By mid-afternoon, officials said they were confident there were no victims still inside the two-story motel.
