The number of Alabama school children attending private school rather than public school has increased in the past 10 years.

The census shows that mostly white children attend private schools in some rural areas, where public schools are mostly black.

But the survey shows many black parents in urban areas, particularly Birmingham, are choosing to pay to send their children to private schools.

The figures show that statewide, 15 percent of white students attend private schools, compared to about three percent of black pupils.

But in Jefferson County, almost six percent of black school children attend private schools.
