The budget increases funding for the Reading Initiative from $12.5 million this year to $40 million in the fiscal year starting Oct. 1.

Interim state Superintendent of Education Joe Morton says it will take two years to expand the Reading Initiative to all kindergarten through third grade classrooms statewide. He called the bill signing Friday "a landmark day."

Riley signed the budget at Daniel Pratt Elementary School in Prattville. The school has had the Reading Initiative for four years.

The budget also increases funding for school textbooks, libraries and computers. It also includes nearly $12 million for legislators to pass out to projects in their districts.
