The Enterprise Public Works Department has outgrown its current facility.

The city council is putting final word in on plans to expand.

The Enterprise Public Works facility was built in 1978 when the city's population was just under 18,000.
That was nearly 8,000 people ago and employees at the public works facility say they're feeling the growing pains.

“We’re tripping over each other and we have no storage space whatsoever,” says Public Works Director Jimmy Kilgore.

“The large equipment that is necessary to run the city; they do not have the room to be able to work on it there,” says Mayor Kenneth Boswell.

City leaders originally considered building a whole new facility, but now they've changed their plans.

“The way the economy is now we're going to revitalize our public works facilities,” says Boswell.

A new complex would have cost tax payers around $8 million, but now leaders have a million dollars budgeted for upgrades that they say will stretch the building's life 20 more years.

“We’re hoping that with the construction prices that we're seeing come in that we can do it actually for less than that,” says Boswell.

Here are the plans.

“We will be adding on approximately 24 feet on the east side. By the time everything is closed in we will have about double the capacity in our automotive section,” says Kilgore.

They also plan to add an awning on the opposite side of the garage area.

“Over my right shoulder you can see an old administrative building,” says Kilgore, “We will almost double the size of this facility.”

The yard will also be expanded and paved to provide a better place to store the city's equipment.

The mayor expects work to begin in the next 3 to 4 months.
