Royal Caribbean International cruise lines says it's adding equipment to its ships that will do a better job of cleaning sewage and waste water before it's dumped in the ocean.

The equipment will clean up to 24,000 gallons of sewage and 265,000 gallons of water from laundries, showers, sinks and dishwashers that is dumped at sea every day.

The announcement came a month after the nonprofit advocacy organization Oceana and other groups called for the cruise line to clean up its sewage and wastewater to protect marine habitats.

At the time, the company accused the groups of "grandstanding."

Oceana officials said that Royal Caribbean's decision was "a precedent-setting move."
